The JabuMind Professional Development trainings are designed to help teachers build a foundational understanding of how social and emotional learning (SEL) skills and a personal mindfulness practice are essential to their emotional well-being. Participants will acquire a body of knowledge to address many of the challenges teachers face in the classroom and beyond. Training modules are both educational and experimental with a focus on the development of SEL skills while introducing mindfulness practices to support newly acquired knowledge.

The JabuMind Professional Development Series addresses the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) five core SEL competencies. While strengthening their own SEL skills through the trainings, teachers will learn to confidently teach SEL in the classroom, while helping to foster an environment conducive to student learning and the development of social, emotional and academic competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

  1. Compassion Fatigue and The Importance of Self-Care

This training provides teachers with the opportunity to obtain the tools, strategies and insight necessary to help protect them from experiencing Compassion Fatigue. Teachers are at greater risk as a result of the stress they encounter dealing with the impact of COVID-19. Some of the difficulties children and adults face during the pandemic include an increase in child abuse and neglect, higher unemployment, food insecurity, and, sadly, loss of life.

In this training, teachers will learn mindfulness tools that help support their self-care while facing the challenge of supporting their students. Teachers will learn the impact of self-awareness skills on their own lives as well as those of their students, emphasizing skills such as identifying emotions, having an accurate self-perception, recognizing strengths, possessing self-confidence, and demonstrating healthy boundaries.

  1. Embracing Change

Educators are consistently called on to pivot based on changing circumstances that lead to altering duties, expectations, procedures, calendars, schedules, curricula, and operational practices. Participants will learn to identify what patterns are coming up, particularly in the face of fears and uncertainty as a result of all the changes brought about due to COVID-19. They will learn to distinguish between change and transition and how to ultimately thrive during challenging times.

In this training, teachers will be introduced to mindfulness tools to support and encourage inner work and self-exploration leading to greater self-awareness, accurate self-perception and personal growth.  Teachers will learn skills to help recognize and identify underlying feelings and emotions while recognizing personal strengths.

  1. Difficult Conversations

Difficult conversations with parents, students, and co-workers commonly rank as one of teachers’ greatest concerns. This training will help teachers learn the key elements of strong communication and the impact their feelings and emotions have on how they are showing up to difficult conversations. This training will emphasize skills such as the ability to communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, and manage conflict. Participants will learn the value of mindfulness practices and the ability to be fully open, aware and active in the present moment. Teachers will experience mindfulness tools to help build their capacity for attention, connection, compassion and empathy, and to regulate their emotions and create greater emotional freedom.

  1. Critical Discourse on Inequity

The effects of race, racism and other social biases are unavoidable aspects of our modern world. This training is designed to provide teachers with the opportunity to reflect on their own identity, as they come into greater awareness of how issues of power and privilege may be showing up in the classroom. Participants will learn strategies that will help transform their communication patterns, as they explore how to cultivate trust, cooperation, and collaboration with others.

This training focuses on the impact of social awareness skills on educators’ own identity as well as those of their students, emphasizing skills such as perspective-taking, empathy, appreciating diversity, and respect for others. Mindfulness tools will be introduced to support and encourage inner work and self-exploration leading to greater self-awareness and personal growth.
